Entrepreneurs See a Web Guided by Common Sense (from NYTimes)
exploit the content of social computing sites, which allow users to collaborate in gathering and adding their thoughts to a wide array of content, from travel to movies.
Radar’s technology is based on a next-generation database system that stores associations, such as one person’s relationship to another (colleague, friend, brother), rather than specific items like text or numbers.
One example that hints at the potential of such systems is KnowItAll, a project by a group of University of Washington faculty members and students that has been financed by Google. One sample system created using the technology is Opine, which is designed to extract and aggregate user-posted information from product and review sites.
One demonstration project focusing on hotels “understands” concepts like room temperature, bed comfort and hotel price, and can distinguish between concepts like “great,” “almost great” and “mostly O.K.” to provide useful direct answers.
Whereas today’s travel recommendation sites force people to weed through long lists of comments and observations left by others, the Web. 3.0 system would weigh and rank all of the comments and find, by cognitive deduction, just the right hotel for a particular user.
Like Radar Networks, Metaweb is still not publicly describing what its service or product will be, though the company’s Web site states that Metaweb intends to “build a better infrastructure for the Web.”
Both Radar Networks and Metaweb have their roots in part in technology development done originally for the military and intelligence agencies. Early research financed by the National Security Agency, the Central Intelligence Agency and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency predated a pioneering call for a semantic Web made in 1999 by Tim Berners-Lee, the creator of the World Wide Web a decade earlier.
During his talk, he implied that Cyc is now capable of answering a sophisticated natural-language query like: “Which American city would be most vulnerable to an anthrax attack during summer?”
I.B.M. has used the system to do market research for television networks on the popularity of shows by mining a popular online community site, he said. Additionally, by mining the “buzz” on college music Web sites, the researchers were able to predict songs that would hit the top of the pop charts in the next two weeks — a capability more impressive than today’s market research predictions.

BitTorrent, Wal-Mart To Open Online Video Stores (Media Post Publications)
BitTorrent forged deals to sell movies from major Hollywood studios Paramount Pictures, Lionsgate and Twentieth Century Fox Film, as well as TV shows from MTV Networks, starting February--while retail giant Wal-Mart has begun testing digital downloads by offering customers who bought DVDs of "Superman Returns" a downloadable version for an extra few dollars more ($2 for download to portable device, $3 to PC).

YouTube's Doppelganger (from Forbes.com)
It's getting tougher and tougher to break copyright law on YouTube
these days. The site now performs frequent purges of television shows
and other proprietary content uploaded by users. But those forbidden
files can still be had. They've largely migrated to DailyMotion.com,
another video-uploading site that replicates YouTube's model of
user-provided videos. DailyMotion, by contrast, seems to do little if
any regulation of copyrighted material, nor does it limit the lengths
of clips.

Shawn Fanning of Napster fame says he plans within the next month or so to launch Rupture, a virtual social community for online gamers. He raised seed money from a group of investors, including Ron Conway and Joi Ito.
Rupture was inspired by Fanning's newfound love of online gaming. During the past year and a half, he's become a big fan of World of Warcraft,
joining a guild and climbing up the ranks of players.
The more he
played, though, the more he became frustrated with how hard it is to
communicate with other players, organize game playing together and
learn about other gamers' identities, online and offline.
Rupture
I haven't seen the service but Fanning explained it to me this way: Using an add on or a software download, Rupture taps into the game to automatically pull together character names, profiles, and resources, and publish them on a personalized site. Rupture will also pull together stats to create individual and guild rankings and provide a place for guilds to organize their playing. As Rupture tracks each member's playing over time, these personalized profiles evolve. And players will be able to chat in groups or with other individuals and download other addons and game demos.

New Site Uncovers Pirated Movies
Now, however, a site, DailyMotionMovieVids.com, directs Web users to movies that are available for free online. Two companion sites, DailyMotionEpisodes.com and DailyMotionMusic.com, do the same for TV shows and music. The movie site quietly launched last week, while the music site went live earlier this month. All three sites, known as the DM* Network, rely on users to contribute information about where on the Web particular movies, TV shows and music can be found.
へええと思ってDailyMotionMovieVids.comを見に行ってみたらあるわあるわ
Harry Potter! Star Wars!
The DailyMotionMovieVids.com site states that it's legal because it isn't hosting any videos, just directing users to them. But Corynne McSherry, a staff attorney with the Electronic Frontier Foundation, said that the law is murky. "The current legal situation is that it's a little bit of a mix," she said, adding: "It's unclear what the law is going to be for copyright protection in the context of linking."

"AMA(American Marketing Association)’s survey revealed that compared to a company that uses only
professional advertising, most adults feel that a company that uses
customer-created advertising is more customer-friendly (68%), creative
(56%), and innovative (55%).
Survey respondants between the ages of 18 and 24 are more likely than those between the ages of 25 and 64 to say a company that uses customer-created advertising is less trustworthy (21% versus 10%, respectively), less socially-responsible (20% versus 10%, respectively) and less customer-friendly (13% versus 5%, respectively)."

30th Anniversary of Elvis's death next summer、
Sales for Reese's -- No. 1 in the chocolate category -- fell slightly during the last year to $412 million.
This year's buzz aside, Elvis has done well hawking products
posthumously, ranking first in Forbes' 2005 list of top-earning
deceased celebrities with $45 million in sales last year. The King is
featured in ads for the Honda CR-V, he'll be touted in a TV Guide
tribute CD on the magazine's Dec. 11 cover and he has recently been
licensed for everything from revolvers (the Elvis Presley "Taking Care
of Business" Smith & Wesson) to keys. Zippo has sold out its
limited-edition Elvis lighters annually for the last 20 years.
Retailers agree, even those who aren't crazy about the flavor
combination. "I didn't like the way it tastes, but anything with Elvis
has a possibility," said one Midwest grocery executive. "The girls in
my office are thrilled." Even 30 years dead, Elvis still has a way with
the ladies.
